How could they only have two wellness croissants left at 8 in the morning? Bea and I wondered this as we stopped at the bakery after our morning shopping run of fresh strawberries and raspberries, bananas, and Greek yogurt ( the brand I like in 500 gram containers but back home we can only get it in 125 gram containers, which provides my classroom with an infinite supply of recycled sorting cups ... Yet another question about how can German grocer stores NOT carry something that is more economical, more ecological, and more efficient, when other parts of the European Union can ... But then, I'm also still trying to figure out why German grocery stores can't stock NO fat yogurt or No fat milk). Oops, off topic .. So we bought the last two EXCELLENT tasting Wellness Croissants, and headed back to the apartment for breakfast.
Two hours and countless conversation topics later, we make our plan for the day.
Through the underground passage way ....
And Bea and I head out for a leisure walk down the hill to the Old Jewish Quarter. We make a stop at the Convent of St. Agnes. There is a special exhibition by a South Korean artist who is part of The Underground Project. It seems this project consists of buying second nah books and burying the paper from the books in various places around the world (as in the garden of the Convent of Saint Agnes) and returning years later to dig up the paper and see what you have. I didn't understand this exhibit very well.
The permanent exhibition was on Central European Medieval Art. I grew a bit weary of all the Virgin Mary and Christ Child carvings and paintings, and crucifixions, but I learned a thing or two.
I love that shade of blue so often used in Mary's robes. I'm certain this comes from reading "the Virgin Blue" by Tracy Chevalier and a general love of blue.
Sometimes Mary's robe has a wheat motif due to the "bread of life" concept.
Some crucifixion scenes show blood spewing from Christ's side and raining down on people's heads.
The curve of Mary's hips when she is holding the baby Jesus indicates the likely timeframe of the work.
There are numerous ways to depict the Annunciation. Today I saw a new one. There's a hole in Mary's head that a speeding snowball with a cherub pulling a cross are heading into it.
We headed on down the street and stopped at A cafe....
It was great to watch the crowds of tourist and
